Reclaiming Our Power: Reflections on Harvard’s Black in Design 2017

Harvard Black in Design 2017 Power and Voice

Harvard’s Black In Design was a conversation about how we can reclaim our power through the medium of design. Designers create the world around them; they incite change, raise awareness and birth culture. Of course there are many injustices throughout the world, but the conference made me realize that design can be used to dismantle and disrupt the current system.

The two most impactful concepts I find myself dwelling on days after the conference are:

  1. We all have individual power and capacity to impact society. It’s up to us to acknowledge that influence.
  2. The dreamers are the ones who will change the world. It is a super power to imagine something that doesn’t yet exist. Dream of a balanced and beautiful world, then take action to bring it to life.

Design is everywhere; it is intertwined in every single human interaction. It is the duty of designers to cultivate experiences and systems in a way that benefits humanity. We have no choice but to use design to make the world a more harmonious place to live.
