Go Mobile or Go Down

Since announcing its new way of ranking mobile searches, Google has created lots of confusion and panic for brands and businesses alike. Here’s how this latest change will affect you:

If your site is not mobile-friendly, other websites that are will rank above yours when using Google’s search engine on a mobile device. For an example, say you want to find a good burger joint in your neighborhood. You Google “burger restaurant in Grant Park” from your phone and get a list of results. But now, the results you see first are the ones that Google deems mobile friendly.

So what happens to websites that are not optimized for mobile? Well, as more competitors get on board, websites that aren’t mobile friendly will keep getting pushed to the bottom. All of a sudden, your company could be showing up on the fifth page of Google’s search results no matter how much effort you’ve put into SEO. And as we’ve seen, users rarely get past that first page.

Wondering how your website stacks up? Google has provided a useful tool that will quickly test your site’s mobile readiness. If you failed, don’t have a “mobilegeddon” meltdown. Sol can help.

If you were already thinking about a design change or re-tooling of your site, it might make sense to go ahead and re-code your site to be fully responsive. If you’re pretty happy with your site, or you don’t want to invest in redevelopment right now, a mobile theme can be applied fairly easily. Even if it is a temporary fix, applying a mobile-only theme could save your mobile search rankings and keep your name in front of customers.
