Last month, we had so much fun creating the graphic for our 20th anniversary and the accompanying ornaments. To show you a glimpse into our collaborative process, Sol’s designer-illustrator-printmaker-extraordinaire Brittany shares the inspiration behind the design.
For the ornament, we wanted something that wasn’t overtly related to any specific holiday. Our clientele is diverse as well as our team, so we wanted something that felt universal. Since the ornament also celebrates Sol’s 20th anniversary, the design needed to speak to that big milestone! Mary wrote a fun blog post about how Sol being 20 years old is synonymous with a 20-year-old in college. As a company, we are looking toward the future with the same hopefulness, awe, and wonder as a college student might. It’s the feeling of being on the brink of a new phase.
This spirit inspired the raised hand, which evokes openness and a greeting. The hand is also important because it is the universal symbol of making. Whether it’s content, design, coding, digital work, or something else, everything Sol does is something made. We’re creators.
We added the abstracted snippets of our favorite projects as a nod to what we’ve done. Those snippets evolved organically into the theme of the sun and planets, which of course is perfect given Sol means “sun” in Spanish. With that in mind, Jake took the image and made an awesome social media graphic with projects orbiting around the hand.
The ornaments are screen printed with a technique that allows interesting accidental patterns. Each ornament is also unique in its color pattern. This was so cool to see because the concept of making came alive in both the ideation *and* in the production. The colors are also so sunny!
