Sol Wars Episode XVII: Revenge of the Serif

The Tortoise Awakens

Zoo Atlanta came to us with a mighty need for a new digital habitat. Together, we transformed a complex system with various organisms into a simple yet highly visual online experience. This new site is capable of carrying them forward for eons to come.

The Phantom Conference

We’re always keeping a close eye on galactic happenings, and we’ve found one of the best ways to do this is conferring with other members of the Rebel Alliance. In 2017 Mary and Adam attended the Growth Marketing Conference along with our crew at 3C Software; Jake, Marius, and Rashid took off to Boston for Black in Design, a design conference hosted by the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and in December Jen attended Digital Summit Dallas to help us stay privy to the latest in digital marketing.

Sol Shot First

Without quality photo and video content, the force will always be weak. Our quests for content took us to some distant planets such as Athens, Alabama, Mississippi and OTP. This year we shot a series of how-to and about us videos for Blacklidge Emulsions, three houses worth of moulding for Woodgrain Distribution, and a couple of projects carried out by Prime Engineering.

Intergalactic Awesomeness

This year several fantastic new members joined the Alliance, and others left for distant worlds. We were thrilled to welcome Kathie, Rashid and Marius to Team Sol—almost enough to make up for how sad we are about Elizabeth’s departure.

Andrus Action

Of course, our most constant battle is for social justice. It’s a tough fight every year and 2017 was no different. We’re thrilled to be able to support clients like the Andrus Family Foundation—this year we produced several podcasts and helped them publish a social justice curriculum to help train the next generation.

Never Tell Me the Odds

SolDesign made headlines with a writeup in FastCompany for the work we did with GALEWiLL on an ‘American Dream Score’ calculator. The intent was to disprove the idea that success is necessarily the result of hard work—that the advantages you’re born with can have a massive impact on one’s outcomes in life. GALEWiLL is developing resources like discussion guides for classrooms to get people thinking about privilege and hopefully out in the community volunteering to make an actual difference.

Sol-ar Eclipse

From our little perch on planet Earth this year we recieved a cosmic reminder that we’re all part of something greater. On August 21, several Solarians travelled into the path of totality to experience this once-or-twice in a lifetime happening, while the rest of the crew held the fort back home. (You can read our individual experiences on our blog.)

Extraterrestrial Ecosystem

3C often provides us with our most challenging yet rewarding missions. This year we took on their Cost Management Ecosystem—the concept that everything in cost accounting, just like the natural universe, is connected. We developed a series of slideshow graphics and animations as well as an interactive site such that lone travellers might experience the beauty of the ecosystem.

Paella Power

To say thank you to all of our clients for supporting us in our quest this year, we hosted a feast to end all feasts, ate a bunch of paella, and drank enough Spanish wine to put down Jabba the Hutt.

A New Hope

What good is a ship without any passengers? This year we were very excited to welcome a few new faces aboard: Access to Capital for Entrepreneurs (ACE), 2-20 Records Management, Prime Engineering, The Nathan Cummings Foundation, and GivingPoint. We so look forward to the new destinations 2018 will bring!
